Growing Notes
- Plant family: Fabiaceae
- Planting season: Jan to Oct
- Harvest: Mar to Nov
- Partners: tomato, lettuce, carrot, radish, cucumber, potato
- Rotate with: lettuce, kale, tomato, curcubit (cucumber, melon, gourds, and squash), can also use nitrogen-rich soil to fertilize mandarin tree
- Avoid planting with: onion, garlic
Planting Tips
- Use a little nitrogen fertilizer at time of planting. Try mixing coffee grounds when planting to add nitrogen and deter slugs.
- Noticed powdery mildew all over both varieties (July 2024). It has been a sunny summer. Peas might do better if planted in Jan/Feb and Aug/Sep.
- Shelling don’t provide much food considering the amount of space they take up. Snow peas and snap peas are a more economical choice.
- Will bear fruit in 8-10 weeks. The first pods will form at the bottom of the plant. Pick these as soon as they are ready. It will encourage the plant to grow and make more pods. (from Golden Gate Gardening)
- Varieties to try: Garden Peas – ‘Maestro’ ‘Oregon Trail.’ Snow Peas – ‘Oregon Sugar Pod II’ ‘Oregon Giant’ ‘Super Sugar Snap.’ (from Golden Gate Gardening.) From my own research: https://www.rareseeds.com/pea-lillian-s-caseload
Variety Notes
- Purchase Early Perfection Dark Seeded at True Leaf Market
- Purchase King Tut Purple at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
- King Tut Purple is mealy and not as good as Early Perfection. Won’t buy again.
